Police say vehicle owner sustained neck fractures after dispute escalated at a Memphis intersection.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A repo driver is behind bars on a $500,000 bond after police say he beat the owner of a vehicle he was seizing with a heavy metal pipe.
According to the Memphis Police Department, the victim was hospitalized with two neck fractures and a gash above his ear that required stitches.
Arrest documents say the assault happened Friday at an intersection in Memphis’ Whitehaven area.
According to the arrest affidavit, Douget was actively repossessing a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe from a nearby neighborhood when he stopped at the intersection of Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road to air the tires.
The Tahoe’s owner told police he caught up with the tow truck at that intersection, where an argument ensued.
Douget allegedly hurled racial slurs at the man before exiting his truck armed with a metal pipe.
The victim alleged that Douget knocked his phone out of his hand and punched him in the face. Shortly after, the victim’s girlfriend began recording the fight, and that’s when Douget allegedly struck the man in the head with the pipe he was carrying.
According to the affidavit, the pipe was the arm of a two-ton jack.
The victim reportedly lost consciousness as a direct result of the strike.
Douget admitted to investigators that he armed himself with the pipe but denied using it against the victim.
He is slated to appear in court Tuesday morning.
Arrest documents say Douget was driving for Memphis Towing & Recovery at the time of the attack.
