The safest post is often the one you never make.
EDITORIAL
In today’s world, it’s easy to share everything that’s happening in your business. A successful recovery. A difficult customer interaction. A workplace issue. A funny story from the day. A photo from the lot. A complaint you want to respond to.
But just because you can post it doesn’t mean you should.
We are seeing more and more social media postings from businesses, and you might be surprised to learn that many of your contracts actually forbid this kind of sharing altogether.
For businesses operating in highly regulated industries, social media isn’t just a marketing tool—it can become evidence.
Every photo, every comment, every video, every “private” post, and even deleted posts have the potential to be captured, shared, subpoenaed, or used against your company years later.
The internet has a very long memory.
Ask yourself before posting:
• Does this reveal confidential business information?
• Does it expose a customer, employee, client, or location?
• Could this be misunderstood if viewed without context?
• Would I be comfortable seeing this post in a courtroom, an audit, or on the front page of the news?
Compliance isn’t just about following policies inside the office. It’s about protecting your company everywhere, including online.
Your reputation takes years to build and only seconds to damage.
The safest post is often the one you never make.
Protect your clients. Protect your employees. Protect your company. Protect yourself.
Remember: Once something is posted online, you no longer control where it goes, who saves it, or how it may be used in the future.
Think first. Post second. Sometimes, don’t post at all.
