Routine recovery allegedly escalated into gunfire, body armor, explosive threats, and a dramatic rooftop showdown.
Some repossession assignments involve locating a vehicle. Others involve tracking down a borrower. And every so often, one evolves into something that sounds more like the plot of an action movie than a routine recovery.
Authorities in Logan County, West Virginia, say a vehicle repossession attempt recently spiraled into an armed confrontation, a rooftop standoff, alleged explosive threats, and multiple felony charges.
According to criminal complaints filed in Logan County, employees of a repossession company traveled to a residence in Wilkinson, West Virginia, to recover a vehicle. What should have been a routine assignment allegedly changed dramatically when 40-year-old Rex Hale and 29-year-old Breonna Dillon emerged from the residence.
Investigators allege Hale brandished an AR-15-style rifle and fired multiple rounds into the area. No injuries were reported, but the incident immediately transformed a repossession assignment into a law enforcement response.

Authorities say Hale and Dillon then left the scene, leading deputies and West Virginia State Police to a property on Milkhouse Hollow Road where officers attempted to take Hale into custody.
That’s when the situation reportedly took another unusual turn.
According to investigators, Hale ran into a nearby barn and refused to cooperate with law enforcement. Authorities allege he then climbed onto the roof of the structure while wearing body armor and began threatening officers below.
According to the criminal complaint, Hale told authorities the property was rigged with pipe bombs, dynamite, and other explosives. Investigators say he warned officers to leave the area or he would detonate the devices.
As if the scene wasn’t dramatic enough already, authorities allege Hale began a verbal countdown from the roof before eventually retreating into the barn loft.
At that point, the West Virginia State Police Special Response Team was called to assist.
Despite the escalating threats, the standoff ended without further violence. Authorities successfully took Hale into custody and reported finding body armor, blasting caps, an AR-15-style rifle, and a semi-automatic pistol in his possession.

During the investigation, officers also discovered four young girls allegedly left unattended at a nearby residence. According to authorities, the home had no electricity or running water, and investigators reported that two of the children were found in soiled diapers.
Hale now faces an extensive list of charges, including terroristic threats, possession of an explosive device, wearing body armor during the commission of a felony, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit a felony, five counts of wanton endangerment, and four counts of child neglect creating risk of injury.
Dillon was also arrested. Authorities allege she refused repeated orders to leave the area during the standoff and had to be physically removed from the scene. She faces charges including obstruction, conspiracy to commit a felony, and four counts of child neglect creating risk of injury.
Most recovery agents expect emotional reactions, verbal confrontations, and the occasional call to law enforcement. Few expect to find themselves at the opening chapter of what investigators describe as a barn-roof standoff involving firearms, body armor, alleged explosives, and a countdown worthy of a Hollywood screenplay.
Fortunately, no recovery agents, officers, or bystanders were injured during the incident.
