Macon, GA – April 2025 – Shoot up a Repossessors truck at a funeral home and win reelection. That’s the size of it for now, but what awaits the newly reelected County Commissioner will be in the hands of a jury now that that he’s been indicted on a slew of charges including two for aggravated assault.
More than eighteen months after the fact, Twiggs County Commissioner Lonnie Ford was indicted by a Twiggs County grand jury this month on aggravated assault charges. The charges stem from a wild series of events following his alleged opening fire at a repossession agent who had just repossessed his daughter’s car back in October of 2023.
Despite these charges, Ford was reelected to the same seat in 2024.
The incident occurred on October 4th of 2023 at about 10 pm when Ford was reportedly startled to see his daughter’s truck being towed from his home. Bringing his son, and according to police, his .40 cal. pistol, he took chase. Catching up to the repossession agent at the Reece Funeral home off of Highway 80, Ford allegedly opened fire.
Police report that Ford opened fire on the driver’s side tires of the repo agent’s truck and flattening one.
Either in chase or in cooperation, both Ford and the repossession agent drove to the sheriff’s office where, by about 10:30pm, Ford was placed under arrest.
According to the sheriff’s department, the Repo Man provided legitimate proof of authority to repossess the truck.
Ford claims to have believed that the repossession agent was stealing his daughter’s truck.
According to the sheriff, Ford was charged with aggravated assault, firing a firearm near a highway, reckless conduct, and damage to property. According to the sheriff shooting at a vehicle with a person inside is considered aggravated assault even if Ford did not intend to hit him.
Ford is reported to have bailed out for $8,500 at about 9am the next morning.
Fast forward to April 14th of 2025 and an indictment has finally been handed down. A county grand jury has found that there was sufficient evidence to charge Ford with two counts of aggravated assault, discharging a gun near a highway or street, reckless conduct and criminal property damage in the second degree.
The indictment makes the charges against Ford official.
But none of this seemed to bother the constituents of District 1 of Twiggs County. Back in 2024, with these charges hanging over his head, they reelected him to his seat at the Twiggs County Board of Commissioners. This complicates matters.
The indictment will most likely spark a review commission, to evaluate whether Ford’s indictment merits suspending him as the case moves through the courts. That panel is typically appointed by Governor Brian Kemp when a politician is indicted on felony charges.
They evaluate whether the indictment “relates to and adversely affects” the indicted politician’s ability to serve in their role.
A trial date has not yet been announced.
