Laredo, TX – October 20, 2026 – A late-night vehicle repossession in Laredo, Texas, escalated into an armed confrontation and police standoff, resulting in the arrest of a husband and wife accused of threatening a repossessor attempting a recovery.

According to the Laredo Morning Times, the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on October 16 in the 1800 block of Santa Rita Street.

Police said a 35-year-old repossession agent was attempting to repossess a black 2022 Chevrolet Silverado for alleged nonpayment when the homeowner, identified as 55-year-old Jose Luis Maldonado, came outside and confronted him.

The agent told responding officers that Maldonado allegedly pointed a firearm at him during the confrontation.

Following the reported threat, Maldonado returned inside the residence and refused to come out when officers arrived. According to KGNS television, police eventually forced entry into the home and detained him.

Officers recovered a black semi-automatic handgun as evidence.

Maldonado was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.

Both suspects were booked into the Webb County Jail on October 17.

No injuries were reported during the confrontation or subsequent police response.

Authorities have not publicly identified the recovery employee or the recovery company involved. It is also unclear whether the Silverado was ultimately recovered.
