Repossession Agent Shot in the Neck - In Critical Condition

Talladega, AL – October 27, 2023 – After a late-night exchange of words with the borrower at the residence, the agent left with the car in tow. But he didn’t get far. Shotgun fire sent him crashing into a tree and fighting for his life.

At approximately 1:28am on the morning of Friday the 27th, officers of the Talladega Police Department (TPD), officers responded to a call regarding the discharge of a firearm on the 1300 block of Nimitz Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a 2017 Dodge Ram 4500 tow truck off the road and in the woods crashed into a tree with a vehicle in tow behind it.

Once officers approached the vehicle, they found an unnamed 24-year-old Ohatchee man behind the steering wheel. He was suffering from shotgun wounds to the back of his neck.

Emergency services were called and he was taken to Citizens Baptist Medical Center before being transferred to UAB Hospital via an ambulance. Police characterized his condition as critical.

Detectives discovered that the repossessor had gone to an address on Nimitz Avenue to repossess a vehicle for Allstar Recovery. According to police, the agent had successfully lifted the vehicle and was about to leave when the borrower arrived and a confrontation ensued.

After an exchange of words, the repossessor left the scene with the vehicle repossessed and secured on the back of his tow truck. According to police, the borrower followed him.

Dexter Lamar Swain, 44

Stopping on Nimitz Avenue, the agent came under fire. A single blast from a shotgun shattered the back window of the tow truck and struck the agent in the back of the neck.

At the conclusion of their investigation, police arrested 44-year-old Dexter Lamar Swain, of Talladega.

Swain was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and was also charged for violations of condition of release. Swain had a prior arrest and indictment for first-degree rape and sodomy in 2010.

Swain is being held on a $200,000 bond in the Talladega County Jail.

The agent injured agent is reported to be an employee of Allstar Recovery. This is most likely the same Allstar recovery that was involved in the September 29th repossession that ended with the police killing of 39-year-old Stephen Perkins in Decatur, Alabama. As previously written about, there is also an All Star Towing and Recovery in Decatur, that was initially and inaccurately accused by locals as having been involved.

Police did not name the injured agent and his identity has still not been published anywhere to my knowledge. If anyone has more information to share, please contact us at karmstrong@cucollector.com.
