VA Man Arrested for Stealing Repo from Yard

Waverly, VA – 4 January 2019 – A Waverly man stands accused of stealing a repossessed car from a Penniman tow yard. Khalid Abdullah, 45 of Sussex County, has been charged with using a vehicle without the owner’s authorization and trespassing, according to arrest warrants filed in York-Poquoson General District Court.

On Dec. 26 around 2 p.m., York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Walkers Recovery, a property repossession company, for a report of a stolen car, the court filings said.

An employee of the recovery company, James Dunevant, told deputies he contacted the former owner of a repossessed vehicle so that the man could come to the tow yard to retrieve personal property from the vehicle, according to the court filings.

The man, Abdullah, never came to pick up his property. Instead, he was dropped off at Walkers Recovery by an unspecified person and drove away in his repossessed Hyundai Elantra, the court filings said.

In the process, Abdullah allegedly walked into an area posted with no trespassing signs, according to the court documents.

When contacted by police, Abdullah told the deputies his car was stolen by Walkers Recovery, the court filings said.

Deputies determined the car was lawfully repossessed by Walkers Recovery, according to the court documents.

Abdullah was charged and arrested on Dec. 26 around 5:30 p.m., the arrest warrants said. Abdullah is out on bail, and his next scheduled appearance in York-Poquoson General District Court is on Jan. 7 at 8:30 a.m., according to online court records.

If convicted to the maximum extent of the law, Abdullah faces as much as two years behind bars and $5,000 in fines, according to the Virginia Code.
