Not exactly repossession related, but way back in the 90’s when I worked in the field, I used to sit on the couch watching TV in the evenings in front of a box of ignitions, padlocks and handcuffs practicing lock picking. ( I was also a huge Houdini fan) While not a necessary skill now, in my day, a time when Transformer tow booms were state of the art, but there were many places you couldn’t get a truck into, we often used stealth, patience and old school techniques like lock picking. As the result, I’ve always had a healthy interest in locksmithing and recently found an odd guilty pleasure in the form of a massive library of YouTube videos from a lawyer turned locksmith.
Locksport. I’d never heard of it until a few weeks ago when my son turned me on to it. Hell, I was doing it before I knew it was a thing. M. Schuyler Towne of Burlington, Vermont, aka; “The Lock Picking Lawyer” has his own “Locksport” (yes, it’s a thing) channel with over a million viewers worldwide. Yes, he really is a practicing attorney in the Washington DC area. Towne claims that he first got into lock picking as a kid in middle school and only picked up on Locksport later in life.
Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, this guy can teach you something. On his channel he offers a wide variety of videos where he demonstrates how to break into everything from padlocks to gun safes in his halcyonic voice that makes it all seem so relaxing, when anyone who’s ever had to pick in the field knows, it can be anything but.
While displaying his expert picking skills where he blows past “pickproof locks” with ease, he also shows many hacks to get through oddball items like luggage locks and Masterlocks using a piece of a Red Bull can and a keypad lock using a swiss army knife. This guy makes the lock industry look foolish.
