San Angelo, TX – May 29, 2026 – One inch; it’s a small form of measurement, but it can also be the difference between life and death. One turn of the head, one bump in the road or one fraction of a bullet’s deflection and lives are changed forever. Fortunately, that one inch was shy and saved a west Texas repossession agent’s life.
A Texas man has been arrested after authorities say he opened fire on a recovery agent who was repossessing a vehicle, shattering a tow truck windshield and injuring the agent in the process.
Court documents allege the incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. on May 27th when a recovery agent employed by West Texas Auto Recovery arrived at a residence on Seashore Lane in Robert Lee to repossess a pickup truck on behalf of a title lender.
A Coke County Sheriff’s Office sergeant responded after receiving reports that a tow truck driver had been shot at while leaving the property. Dispatch advised that the driver was bleeding but was unsure whether he had been struck by a bullet. The driver arranged to meet law enforcement at a nearby convenience store.
Upon arrival, deputies observed a black recovery truck towing a white pickup. The recovery agent had suffered a severe laceration above his left eyebrow and had blood covering part of his face. Investigators determined the injury occurred when gunfire shattered the tow truck’s windshield, sending glass flying into the cab.
The agent told authorities he had completed the repossession and was pulling away from the residence when he noticed a man, later identified as 58-year-old Dennis Seider of Robert Lee, Texas, come out of the home and then go back inside. Moments later, the man reportedly returned to the porch and fired multiple shots toward the departing recovery truck.
According to the affidavit, the recovery vehicle was clearly marked and the repossessed pickup was visibly attached to the towing equipment. Authorities estimated the windshield damage to the tow truck at approximately $3,000 to $3,500.
Investigators interviewed Seider the following day. He denied involvement and claimed he had been at his son’s residence until 11 p.m. However, deputies reported finding inconsistencies after speaking with the son, who stated he dropped Seider off at his home around 10 p.m., roughly 30 minutes before the shooting was reported.
Later that day, the recovery agent was presented with a photographic lineup and positively identified Seider as the individual who allegedly fired at the truck.
According to the Tom Green County Jail roster, Seider was booked into custody on May 28 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief causing between $2,500 and $30,000 in damage.
The investigation remains ongoing.
