Tucson, AZ – June 30, 2023 – In and out; the repossession went smooth and the agent was quickly on his way out of the parking lot. What he hadn’t noticed was the four men running from the upper floor motel room after him. Four miles away, they caught up to him and opened fire.
Back on Monday June 26that @ 11PM, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a call of shots fired at the intersection of East Irvington Rd. and South Hotel Drive in Tucson. Arriving at the scene, officers found a repossession agent suffering from a gunshot wound.
The repossession agent, who wished to remain unidentified, reported that a silver sedan, the same as the one parked next to the vehicle that he had repossessed, had pulled up next to him on the passenger side of the truck and opened fire. The repossessor was also armed and leapt from his truck and returned fire sending his assailants fleeing.
Despite numerous rounds fired, the recovery agent was fortunately only hit once and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to reports. It is unknown if any of the alleged shooters were injured by the agent’s return fire.
Deputies conducted an investigation and reviewed surveillance video from the motel located at 314 East Benson Highway, which showed a group of four men pour from the motel room and down to make chase just after the agent left the lot.
On June 28th at around 10:50 a.m., the Pima Regional SWAT Team, along with detectives from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s Robbery-Assault Team and Fugitive Investigations Unit, served a search warrant at the motel and arrested 36-year-old Daniel Maldonado.
Maldonado has been charged with drive by shooting, narcotic drug possession and drug paraphernalia.
His bond was set at $23,000.
“The victim was driving the tow truck as he was on the roadway driving. He was struck by gunfire through the passenger side door of his car. After the driver was shot, he stopped his truck and got out and returned fire to the suspect’s vehicle,” he said.
Detectives reported; “We have three persons of interest right now that were in the car with Mr. Maldonado at the time of the incident that we are trying to identify so we can talk to.”
