Every staff member of every repossession agency needs to see this!
Beaumont, TX – December 1, 2023 – Never stand in front of the car during a repossession if the borrower is behind the wheel. This old rule stands as true today as ever as evidenced by the account of John Neve, the man who had his leg crushed and almost died during a strip club repossession back on September 29th. Perhaps his story and the gruesome images of his injuries could save someone, somewhere.
Most often when we report stories of agent injuries, we find little or no further information on the condition of the agent. Fortunately, this time we do. While he was repossessing a car for his small lot, John Neve made a critical mistake that almost cost him his life or legs. This is a teaching moment worthy of sharing with all repossession agency staff.

As later discovered after the initial story of the man injured during a repossession attempt late last September at the strip club, Temptations Cabaret on College Street in Beaumont, the injured person was not employed by a repossession agency. The injured person, as it turns out, is the owner of a small buy-here-pay-here used car lot. This, however, does not diminish the tragedy not the lessons to learn.
The injured car dealer, John Neves, reached out to CURepossession to share his near-death story of that evening.
John had self-financed the loan on a Hyundai Elantra to 47-year-old Carla Culver at the urging of his then girlfriend who was friends with her. Very soon after, Culver quit making payments and was nowhere to be found. After three months, John located her working as a bartender at Temptations Cabaret in Beaumont.
Having the keys, John went inside to talk to her and let her get her things out of the car. Culver was having none of it and rushed out into the parking lot where she got into the car and started the engine.
Neves then made the near fatal mistake of opening the hood in hopes of disabling the car
Trying to flee, Culver put the car in reverse. Then, for reasons unknown, she put it in Drive and stepped on the gas. Neves was slammed into the car in front of them and had his legs crushed against the other car.
Helpless and pinned in, Neves could only scream in pain while Culver, again for unknown reasons, did not back up the vehicle. John’s screams caught the attention of strip club staff and the club manager was the first to arrive and persuade her to back up.
The pain did not end there. John fell to the ground. His legs had been nearly severed.
The left leg was “degloved” as doctors later described it. Degloved is defined as “a traumatic injury that results in the top layers of skin and tissue being torn away from the underlying muscle, connective tissue or bone.”
The right leg suffered a severe compound fracture with the ankle bone breaking and piercing the skin causing massive bleeding from an artery.
As an army veteran, John recognized the urgency of stopping the bleeding and begged the strip club manager to apply a tourniquet to the right leg, which he did. Under John’s state of shock, he had the forethought of insisting he crank down the pressure extremely hard. This probably saved his life.
Police and emergency medical personnel soon arrived and the severity of John’s wounds were diagnosed to be even worse than thought. John had ruptured his femoral artery and death was imminent if not treated by surgeons immediately. Still bleeding profusely, John was rushed to the hospital with one of the responding officers in the back of the ambulance shouting at him not to die.
The human body, depending on size, holds about 8-12 pints of blood. John required 9 pints of blood combined. After 43 days in the hospital and 8 surgeries, doctors miraculously saved both legs.
But John’s pain and suffering didn’t end there. His left leg required a titanium rod to replace the shattered leg and the right leg required several metal plates and numerous screws. In addition, John has had to undergo extensive skin grafts to the injured areas.
Needless to say, Culver, who allegedly has an extensive rap sheet and now faces 2-20 years for this incident, had no insurance. Neves’ ability to receive any form of compensation from her is basically futile.
John has since had to pay out of pocket for what the VA won’t and needs your help. His daughter has set up a GoFundMe page in hopes of helping John make it through his recovery.
John has since been unable to work and his daughter has been doing her best to help at his car lot while he recovers. While John is not a member of the repossession industry, he has been conducting his own repossessions for years and has never had anything like this happen.
Despite his non-industry profession, I hope that you will all find it in yourselves to help John as he recovers from his gruesome injuries.

Please remember, this could happen to any of your staff or coworkers. I urge you to share this story and the photos with your staff and coworkers. It is an important reminder to stay away from the front or back of a vehicle while the borrower is behind the wheel.
