Where the repossession industry gets its news

The Standardized Key Price Disconnect

The Standardized Key Price Disconnect

Our goal is simple: Better education creates better industry decisions.

One of the biggest disconnects currently happening in the repossession industry is this:

Many lienholders are now attempting to standardize automotive key pricing strictly by “key type.”

On the surface, that may seem logical.

But modern vehicle keys are no longer simple commodities.

A “proximity key” today could mean:

  • a widely available aftermarket key

or

  • a highly encrypted OEM smart key requiring dealer credentials, subscription-based software, tokenized programming, and limited availability.

Two vehicles may both technically use “proximity keys” yet the actual acquisition cost, programming requirements, software access, labor time, and availability can be dramatically different.

That distinction matters.

Especially as newer vehicles continue moving toward:

  • Encrypted immobilizer systems
  • Rolling security protocols
  • OEM-only programming paths
  • Software token requirements
  • And reduced aftermarket support

At Royal Key Supply, we believe many of the current pricing conversations happening in the industry are not the result of bad intentions but rather a lack of technical visibility into how modern automotive key systems actually work.

That’s why we want to extend an open invitation to lienholders, forwarders, recovery companies, and industry decision-makers:

Come learn the realities of modern automotive keys.

Over the past year, we have reached out to multiple organizations offering hands-on education and facility tours focused on:

  • OEM vs aftermarket key availability
  • Why some proximity keys may cost 5x more than others
  • Programming limitations
  • Encrypted vehicle systems
  • Inventory challenges
  • Software licensing costs
  • And the increasing technical burden being placed on repossession companies

In one recent case, after seeing a national lender publish proximity key pricing that would be difficult or impossible to sustain on many late-model vehicles, we offered to host educational discussions at our training facility.

Unfortunately, we never received a response. But the invitation still stands.

This is not about criticizing lenders.

This is about collaboration and education before policies are created that may unintentionally create operational problems for:

  • Repossession agencies
  • Locksmiths
  • Forwarders
  • Auctions
  • And ultimately the lenders themselves.

The automotive key industry has changed dramatically in the last decade. The Standardized Key Price Disconnect

The companies that adapt successfully will be the ones willing to understand the technical realities behind modern vehicle security systems instead of viewing every “proximity key” as the same product.

Our goal is simple: Better education creates better industry decisions.
