Back on January 30th, we celebrated the 90th birthday of one of my oldest friends in the repossession industry, Joe Taylor. This morning, I was advised by his wife Beth, that Joe passed away.

For anyone unfamiliar with Joe, he entered the repossession industry in 1961 as a repossessor for the Associates Finance Company. Through the years to come, Joe left his mark on the repo industry as a man of calm, patience and compassion for both the industry and the borrower alike.
In 1999, Joe created the industry’s first nationally accepted repossession compliance certification program, the Certified Asset Recovery Specialist (CARS) which is still to this day recognized by the legal and finance worlds as the cornerstone of all repossession compliance programs.
More about Joe can be found in our January article celebrating his 90th birthday here.
In 2020, Joe was diagnosed with Lyme disease, a debilitating disease causing him chronic pain, dizziness, fatigue and other debilitating symptoms. It was a disease that can be fatal if not treated aggressively by experts.
Joe, along with his son and wife Beth raised the funds and he received treatment in Mexico. While this provided substantial relief, Joe had later required full time care and was moved into an assisted living facility in Ocala, Florida.
As mentioned, back on January 30th, Joe turned 90 and we were all fortunate enough to have share this with him. Some of us with birthday cards and some of us with flowers and gifts. Danny and Sophia Pabon drove from Orlando to meet him for the first time and helped me Facetime with him one last time.
Last week, Beth had advised me that Joe’s condition had quickly turned for the worse and he had been admitted to hospice care. This morning, she advised me of his passing.
Joe was a longtime friend to me and a frequent contributor to CUCollector since the early days. He was one of the kindest and gentlest men you could have ever met. While his passing is met with sorrow, it was my genuine honor to know him and call him my friend.
No details of Joe’s funeral services have been announced yet and we will share them with you when we learn more.
