Repo Attempt Leads to Car Crash

Mahanoy City, PA – December 2, 2022 – Day or night, every good recovery agent knows to look inside the vehicle before lifting it. And even though the unnamed repossession agents from Capital Towing and Recovery did that, one of them made the near fatal error of standing in front of the car when the borrower started the engine.

Mahanoy City Police were dispatched to the area of Centre Street and Catawissa Street for a report of a disturbance at about 2:50am early Friday morning. Upon arrival, they met a pair of repo men working for Capital Towing and Recovery that had attempted to repossess a Kia Niro.

The agents advised police that they had found the car parked along the side of the street and had backed their tow truck into the vehicle’s rear end. Getting out to check the vehicle identification number, they found 25-year-old Cesar Valenzuela Rojas inside and asleep.

Waking him up, he was initially cooperative. That is until he started the engine.

With the vehicle blocked in from the rear, one of the agents took position at its front on the curb attempting to halt any escape effort. But Rojas rolled the dice and stepped on the gas driving up onto the sidewalk and narrowly avoided striking the ill placed agent.

Once free, Rojas turned west on Centre Street and sped out of town leaving the agents far behind. But he didn’t get too far.

The agents called 911 to report the incident and while arriving officers were in the process of interviewing the men, they learned that the fleeing vehicle had just been involved in an accident less than seven miles away in nearby Butler Township.

Rojas was taken into custody at the scene of the accident. There is no report of any serious injury to anyone involved.

Rojas was later charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. Following his arraignment by on-call Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli, he was locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on a $25,000 (10%) cash bail.
