San Francisco, CA – 3 March 2021 – San Francisco police announced Wednesday that they have arrested a 31 year-old man who allegedly shot at a man repossessing a vehicle last month. In his possession was found multiple firearms and other offenses, including possession of an explosive device for which he has been charged.
The police investigation began about 10 pm. February 21st when a 42 year-old man reported hearing a loud noise while attempting to repossess a 2017 Mercedes Benz on Stillman Street. Then he noticed a bullet hole in the door of the car and saw a man holding a handgun.
The shooter retrieved items from the car and went into his residence. The repo man, who was not injured, continued to hook the Mercedes to a tow truck, but then fled without the car when he saw the shooter return and point an assault rifle from the gated area of his building, police said.
Responding officers searched unsuccessfully for the suspect and had the Mercedes impounded.
On Feb. 23, San Francisco officers and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives returned to the residence and attempted to detain 31-year-old Cameron Ybarra when he exited. Ybarra, who had a handgun in his waistband, resisted and struggled with officers but was taken into custody, police said.
A search warrant was served and investigators “seized items including an assault rifle, privately made firearms (aka “ghost guns”), ammunition, magazines, body armor, a silencer, a ‘3D printer,’ other gun manufacturing items, fraudulent identification materials and suspected bomb making materials,” police said.
“A suspicious device was also located, and the apartment building was evacuated,” police said. “The SFPD Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit arrived and took custody of the item which was determined to be an explosive device.”
After being treated at a hospital, Ybarra was booked at the San Francisco County Jail on several weapons charges, possession of an explosive device and resisting an officer.
Ybarra is on probation for a prior burglary arrest and has an open case in San Francisco Superior Court for a September 2019 “incident in which he violently resisted arrest causing serious injury to an SFPD officer” who has not yet returned to full duty, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
