Chicago, IL – The Alliance of Illinois Repossessors (AIR) is raising the alarm over escalating dangers in the Chicago-area towing and repossession industry, where reckless “chasers” have created an unsafe and predatory environment for motorists and legitimate businesses alike.
Recently, brazen videos circulating on social media have shown tow trucks colliding with each other on Chicago streets, evidence of an increasingly out-of-control problem. These “chasers,” also known as wreck chasers or bandit towers, are predatory operators who monitor police scanners and rush to accident scenes without authorization. Once on scene, they pressure vulnerable motorists into releasing their damaged vehicles, only to impose excessive towing and storage charges.
The situation is further compounded by reports of ties between some of these operators and organized groups or gang affiliations, adding an atmosphere of intimidation and fear. The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) itself has acknowledged the challenge, noting: “We try and stop them and they change their company name and move down the street.”
For legitimate repossession and towing companies, these aggressive actors pose a direct threat. Many are territorial, and even the colors painted on a truck can trigger hostile confrontations. The result is not only heightened risk for industry professionals but also serious consumer protection and public safety concerns.
AIR calls on regulators, law enforcement, and industry stakeholders to strengthen enforcement and oversight to put an end to these predatory practices. Protecting motorists and ensuring a safe, professional recovery and towing environment is critical, not just for the repossession industry, but for the public at large.
