Waynesboro, VA – January 27, 2025 – After almost a year and a half since having been charged with firing shots at a repossession agent an Augusta County man pleaded guilty and has been sentenced. His sentence, six months.
After nearly a year and a half since being charged with shooting at a repossession agent, an Augusta County man, Derek Ray Breeden, has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to six months in prison.

The incident took place in September 2023 when an unnamed repossession agent visited Breeden’s home to repossess a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. While verifying the vehicle’s VIN, the agent informed Breeden of his intent to take the truck.

Breeden then reportedly drove the truck into his garage, prompting the agent to maneuver his wrecker into the truck. In response, Breeden is said to have fired three to four shots towards the tow truck.

The agent escaped unharmed and called 911, while Breeden also fled the scene. Deputies arriving at the scene confirmed the shooting had taken place and subsequently issued warrants against Breeden for reckless handling of a firearm, use or display of a firearm in committing a felony, and attempted malicious wounding.A Slap on the Wrist for Shooting at Repossessor

Breeden returned home that night and was arrested without further incident, being taken to Middle River Regional Jail. The firearm believed to have been used was later seized.

Last month, he negotiated a plea deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of assault and battery. Last Friday, in Augusta County Circuit Court, a judge sentenced the now 45-year-old Breeden to one year in prison, with six months of that sentence suspended.
