Lumberton, NC – 16 May 2017 – Johnny Lee Blanton, 42 and Charles Edward Powell Jr., 43 of Associates Asset Recovery LLC in Florence, South Carolina, were killed in a single vehicle rollover accident early Tuesday morning on Interstate 95 North in Robeson County, the Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened about 2:45 a.m., about one-third of a mile north of Lumberton near the weigh station, according to a report filed by Trooper M.J. Miles.
Johnny Lee Blanton, 42, was driving a 2015 Ford F-450 tow truck registered to Associates Asset Recovery LLC in Florence, South Carolina, the report said.
Blanton, who was traveling about 60 mph, was in the passing lane, closest to the median, when the truck ran off the left side of the highway. The vehicle drifted to the left, sideswiping the guardrail.
Blanton overcorrected, causing the truck to cross both lanes and run off the right side of the highway, hit a ditch and roll over, the report said.
Blanton and his passenger, Charles Edward Powell Jr., 43, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither was wearing a seat belt, the report said.
