Justice Has No Expiration Date

Stafford, TX – December 22, 2025 – Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of 40-year-old repossession agency owner Jerry Humphrey. Found dead in his own bed with three gunshot wounds to the back of his head, the murder went unsolved for years. But this morning at approximately 7:30am, his widow, Jody Johnston (Humphrey) was arrested and being held on the charges of capital murder.

The Murder

On December 22, 2003, just three days before Christmas, the father-in-law of the owner of Texas State Impound and Recovery Inc., Jerry Humphrey, 40, found him dead in his bedroom after entering the house to wake him up. He called the police, and Humphrey was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department and EMS personnel.

The cause of death was gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy performed the next day.

“Humphrey worked at night, he had an evening shift. He was a recovery agent.”

Humphrey’s father-in-law, who lives across the street from the victim, last saw Humphrey at 9:30 a.m.

Humphrey’s wife, Jody, was at work, and his two young children were not in the home at the time of the shooting.

No witnesses came forward. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, and nothing appeared to be missing.

Years went by with no one arrested or charged with the heartless murder.

Cold Justice

As mentioned, the case went cold until investigators on Oxygen Channel’s “Cold Justice” reopened the case. Finding allegations of affairs, murder for hire and insurance policies, evidence was provided that laced this seedy story strong enough to cause charges to be filed on March 20, 2020.

Through their investigation, they shined light on some disturbing allegations levelled at Humphrey’s wife, mother-in-law and one of his drivers. These allegations, accompanied with new evidence led to a Grand Jury indictment and an arrest soon after.

Finally, on March 24, 2020, the Stafford Texas Police Department arrested former Texas State Impound and Recovery Inc. employee Angel Amescua as a person directly involved with the murder.

Angel Amescua Jr.

Amescua was allegedly fired by Humphry after accusations surfaced against him that Amescua had allegedly had with an underage teen girl. Motive established.

To date, there is no known prosecution of this case, but perhaps the past four years has motivated some additional information.

Early on the morning of December 22, 2025, the 22nd anniversary of his murder, I received a text that there had been another rest in the Humphrey case. I had been advised that Jody Johnston (Humphrey) , the widow of Jerry Humphrey had been pulled over and arrested with the charge of capital murder by the Stafford Police Department.

Below is the press release issued by the Stafford Police Department.
