Augusta County, VA – An agent and a borrower had a major difference of opinion on the outcome of the repossession attempt of a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. Extreme differences that ended with shots fired.
About 7pm, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Officers responded to a call to an incident in the 300 block of Turk Mountain regarding gunfire. Upon arrival, they took testimony of the incident from an unnamed repossessor.
According to the agent, he had arrived at the residence to repossess a 2010 Toyota Tacoma for an unnamed client and was in the process of verifying the VIN when he advised the borrower of his intent to repossess the truck.
The agent then reported that the borrower got into the truck and backed it into his garage. In response, the agent backed his wrecker up into it. And that’s when they went too far.
The borrower, 43-year-old Derek Ray Breeden, allegedly fired three to four shots in the direction of the tow truck. Wisely, the agent fled for his life and called 911.
Breeden fled as well.
Arriving deputies found evidence verifying that a shooting had occurred. They quickly received warrants against Breeden for violations of § 18.2-56.1. Reckless handling of a firearm; § 18.2-53.1. Use or display of a firearm in committing a felony; and § 18.2-26/ 18.2-51, Attempted malicious wounding.
In their search, the firearm believed to be used in the incident was seized by deputies.
Later that night Breeden returned home and was arrested without incident. He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
