Kia and Hyundai vehicles are in the news lately, but not necessarily for the best reasons. Several insurance providers (personal auto) are saying that due to the ease with which certain model years can be stolen, that they will no longer insure them as personal vehicles. As the theft rates of these vehicles increased, the trend garnered attention on social media in the form of another ill-fated TikTok challenge:
“The incidents follow a national TikTok trend of teenagers stealing Kia and Hyundai vehicles with just a phone charging cord. The thieves break into the car, pop off the steering wheel column and hot wire the vehicle using a USB cable, CNBC reports. The young thieves then “post videos stealing and driving the cars on social media using the hashtag “Kia Boys” — which has more than 33 million views on TikTok,” according to CNBC.”
We bring this to your attention because according to one of the articles, dealerships are experiencing thefts as well as your everyday car owner. So, your storage lot or potentially even your camera cars if you’re using certain Kia or Hyundai model years could also be potential targets. When something like this comes up, it is a good opportunity to review your security measures, check your fences for any damage that would allow easy access, and check your lights and security systems. Consider storing vehicles that are targeted for any reason in a way to make it more difficult for a thief to take them. Don’t let a phone charging cord and would be thieves cost you deductible dollars!
