Murder suspect shot in the testicles
Hervey City, IL – May 14, 2024 – On the afternoon of May 13th the owner of Greg’s Towing & Recovery in rural Mt. Zion, Illinois was shot dead during an altercation with an apparent borrower at his lot. A fight to the death for the gun by the owner’s nephew with the shooter left both shot. The suspect, in the testicles.
At approximately 2:40 pm on Monday afternoon, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to an incident in Hervey City near Five Star Auto Sales. Initial reports indicated that there was at least one person who had been shot at the location and the potential for a second victim.
Upon arriving, Deputies discovered 48-year-old Gregory Hostetler dead as the result of a gunshot to the head. Gregory Hostetler has been identified as the owner of Greg’s Towing & Recovery Mt. Zion which operated on the same site as Five Star Auto Sales. Greg’s Towing & Recovery is licensed with the state of Illinois Commerce Commission as a licensed repossession agency.
Deputies also found two other victims, the first is identified 18-year-old Kolby Sunderland, Hostetler’s nephew who worked with him. He had been shot in the shoulder.
Scott Flannery, a Sergeant in the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, said it took some time to figure out what had happened.
“It took probably a good half-hour or 40 minutes to get everything going,” he said. “And keep in mind, two of the people were at the hospital, so we had detectives everywhere. On scene at the hospitals, piece in this and piece in that. So, it was quite a chaotic scene there for a while.”
Investigators found that Hostetler and Sunderland had repossessed a vehicle earlier in the morning and that 25-year-old Tiimon Perry came to the lot attempting to recover it. An argument over fees turned into a physical altercation in which Perry produced a handgun and shot Hostetler in the head.
18-year-old nephew, Sunderland attempted to wrestle the gun away from Perry. During the fight, he was shot in the shoulder. Regardless, Sunderland managed to disarm Perry and turned the tables.
Sunderland is reported as firing one shot at Perry. In the testicular area.
Both Perry and Sunderland were transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital. Perry was placed under arrest after he recovered from surgery. He remains in custody at DMH pending his ability to recover and be transported to the Macon County Jail for processing.
Sunderland was treated and released from DMH following treatment for his gunshot wound. Hostetler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Perry has been initially charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He is also being held on Macon County warrants for three counts of Vehicular Invasion and two Decatur Police Department person’s wanted for Vehicle Invasion and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding. Additional charges are likely pending a review by the Macon County State’s Attorney. Perry was not legally authorized to be in possession of the firearm used in the crime.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by friend and fellow repossessor Jason Kirby.
Hello everyone I am asking for help for the family of a good friend and colleague in the Repo Industry. Gregs life was taken from him 5/13/24 while dealing with a customer at his Repo/Tow lot. I am asking for funds to help with expenses in regards to funeral, burial, and whatever other expenses they may incur. Thank you for your generosity.
