His daughter, Stephanie Hughes, tells me there will never be another person like her dad. She came to know him dad just in the last few years.

”I have regrets of not being able to know him as much as I could. But, you know, you always think you have more time until you don’t,” she said.

Steve’s mother, Monica Hughes, has experienced the loss of her two other children. Steve is now the third.

As Monica reflected on his life, she told WIS News Hughes loved his job. Even though she often worried about his safety, he never did.

She said nothing will compare to the day she found out about his death.

“I haven’t cried for years and years and years, but then I did,” she said. “So, I didn’t know, I couldn’t even think, nothing. You know, it was just horrible.”

Stephanie Hughes told WIS she will never understand her father’s death.

“Someone my age was capable of doing this, when I found that out, the emotions that came over me, it was incomprehensible,” she said.

The Murder

As previously reported, early Wednesday morning, Richland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of gunfire at a residence on the 7200 block of Fairmont Road in the Capitol View neighborhood. There, they arrived to discover a bullet riddled tow truck with its blinkers flashing. Inside, 46-year-old Steven Hughes of Lexington was discovered still alive but gasping for air.

On Steve’s GoFundMe page it states that;

Steve arrived at a residence to pickup a car that was being repossessed by the person’s lender. She had told the lender to pickup the car and provided the location address (we have been told it was her ex-boyfriends place).

When Steve backed the tow truck into the driveway to pickup the car prr the repo order, he was met with a large number of bullets fired by the brother the car owner who had surrendered the vehicle to the lender. We are told Steve attempted to leave the residence but before he could make the turn out of the driveway was struck by a bullet(s) preventing him from continuing and his vehicle rolled into a tree on the opposing side of the road where the officers found him upon their arrival, still in the vehicle and barely alive.

He died at the hospital shortly after.
