A chainsaw, a Bic lighter and a pile of burnt rubber
Lafollette, TN – Just a typical day outside the Autozone as a pair of repossessors attempted to repossess a Ford Pickup. And par for the course, they were greeted by a furious borrower and his overly supportive roommate. Shouting, waiving a chainsaw and trying to light the tow truck on fire with a Bic lighter, it didn’t go well.
Last Thursday afternoon, LaFollette Police Campbell arrived at the local Autozone parts store responding to a call about two disorderly men outside the store. One was allegedly attempting to light a tow truck on fire while the other was waiving around a chainsaw in a threatening manner. Beneath the Ford pick up trucks wheels lifted onto the tow truck wheel lift laid a hefty litter of burnt rubber.
Separating the agitated men from the tow truck driver and its passenger, Officer Campbell interviewed the couple inside the tow truck first and found that the passenger had recorded the incident on their phone.
The recovery agents reported that upon lifting the Ford onto their tow truck, one of the men, 48-year-old Eric James Brandenburg hopped into the truck and put it in drive and gunned the engine repeatedly in an alleged attempt to escape the repossession. According to the reporting officer, his efforts persisted for so long that he’d left a pile of burnt rubber beneath it.
Police also reported that once he’d come to the realization that his efforts to free the truck weren’t working, he adapted and went for plan “B.” Jumping from the truck cab, he grabbed a chainsaw out of the back of it and began waiving it around, running or not is not mentioned. Screaming and waiving it through the air like “Leatherface” from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Brandenburg made threatening gestures that he was going to take to the tow truck with it.
According to the police report, not to be outdone, 47-year-old Christopher Dean Wilhoit emerged from the AutoZone. Yelling at the top of his lungs at the agent and passenger in the tow truck that he did not care if he went back to prison, he allegedly threatened to light their truck on fire.
Lighter hand, both men then reportedly walked to the back of the tow truck and “started to mess with the hooking mechanism.”
When questioned, both Brandenburg and Wilhoit pleaded innocent of the salacious allegations leveled against them and elaborated that they “didn’t do nothin’ wrong” and were just trying to get their belongings out of the truck.
Wilhoit, was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
This is not Wilhoit’s first brush with the law. In January of 2017, while in custody of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, he had been taken to the hospital where he made an attempt at escape. After allegedly knocking a nurse over in his flight, he was eventually recaptured and taken to the Campbell County Jail after being found some distance away hidden in a closet in a camper.
Brandenburg, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and driving on a revoked license.
Both men were released on bail last Wednesday night and are scheduled to appear in court on April 11th according to information obtained from the Campbell County Jail.
