Borrower Steals Repo, Leads Deputies on 100mph Chase

San Bernardino, CA – May 13, 2016 – A 23-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly taking his vehicle from a tow truck driver sent to repossess the vehicle and then leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit late Tuesday night.

Daniel Aviles, of San Bernardino, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking and felony evading, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s statement.

Deputies were called to the 24700 block of 5th Street, in San Bernardino, just after 11 p.m. when a tow truck driver reported a man, later identified as Aviles, had taken a car off the tow hitch and allegedly threatened to shoot the driver, officials said.

Investigators learned the tow truck driver was sent to repossess the vehicle from Aviles because he reportedly failed to make payments on the car, officials said.

As the tow truck driver was hooking up the vehicle, Aviles allegedly confronted the driver and demanded he release the vehicle from the tow hitch, according to the statement. Authorities say Aviles then jumped inside the vehicle, released it from the tow truck strap device, and allegedly told the victim he had a gun and threatened to “shoot” him. Aviles then drove off.

Using a GPS tracking device affixed to the vehicle by the tow truck driver prior to the confrontation, deputies tracked Aviles to the westbound 10 Freeway, in the city of Bloomington. When deputies tried to stop the vehicle, Aviles reportedly drove off, leading deputies and the sheriff’s helicopter on a 10-mile pursuit reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Aviles drove back to his neighborhood, jumped out of the car and ran, but he was found later hiding inside his apartment, according to a sheriff’s statement.

Aviles was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
