Elsinore, Utah – June 11, 2012 – When a Sevier County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over 32 year old Clifford Scott Thompson for speeding, his allegation that he was heading east from from Las Vegas to repossess a Hummer didn’t add up.
Also noticing that Thompson was driving a rental car, but was not on the vehicle’s rental agreement, Sgt. Adrian Hillin’s suspicions peaked as Thompson had no repossession authorizations and was sweating profusely while the air conditioner was on.
Sgt, Hillin then noticed some items in the car that “aroused suspicions,” including a bulletproof vest and the car smelled strongly of laundry detergent and looked lived in.
According to Sheriff Nathan Curtis, “The way he was behaving, in a car with the air conditioning on, but just pouring down sweat, his behavior was consistent with our experience with people trafficking drugs.”
Hillin called in for a drug dog from the nearby Salina City Police Department and found six suitcases containing vacuum sealed packages in the
trunk of the car.
After a simple field test, the packages were found to contain THC and most obvious to the eye, were packed with 100 lbs. of marijuana.
Thompson was booked into the Sevier County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $50,000.
Police report that the seized marijuana had a street value of $760,000 and are unaware of where Thompson obtained the drugs or where he was headed, but it was unlikely he was going to repossess a Hummer.
Thompson’s claim to be a repossessor has not been validated.
